February Recipient – Nicole Collins
Nicole Collins is a junior at Needham High School. Nicole was nominated for her “level of maturity beyond her years” by one of her teachers, Joie Edson, who further states that Nicole is well respected by her peers and is an inspirational role model. At Needham High School Nicole is assistant drum major for the Marching Band, President of the Scrabble Club, a member of the Math Honor Society and in the pit, playing clarinet for the school musical 42nd Street. She has also been on the track team both her sophomore and junior year. In addition this fall Nicole started playing with the Metro West Youth Symphony Orchestra. Upon hearing that she was nominated for the RAY of Hope Award, Nicole wrote that awarding a youth who has undergone community service is a wonderful idea. It allows the community of Needham to recognize that despite our negative stereotypes, teenagers really do care about making the world a better place. Nicole has been a volunteer at the Samaritans since her sophomore year where she goes once a week to help man their phone lines, answering calls from distressed teens. Last year she had an internship at the Tippett Home, a hospice in Needham. Nicole has found her volunteer work very gratifying and an eye-opener to the sadness in the world. When she has time, Nicole likes to write creative essays and to read.
